Although color matching may sound complicated, it’s actually pretty easy to do. You'll need some basic tools and be surprised by how easy it really is.
First, you'll need inks that are part of a color mixing system to be able to simulate any PMS color values and avoid the issues of RGB, CMYK, etc. The International Coatings UltraMix® Color System inks make matching PMS colors easy. The on line formulation of colors and relative quantities is quick and straight forward to use.
You provide the PMS (Pantone®) color value to match. Typically the designer specifies that number or you can approximate the value by matching it to a hue from the Pantone® Formula book.
You'll need a scale to mix the color accurately and an empty clean container to mix it in. Depending on the batch size, a pint or quart container with a clean spatula, to do the mixing, may do. Larger batches need a Gallon or a Pail container, using an electrical drill and a paddle attachment to mix the ink evenly. For consistently large batches a turntable mixer, like the ADELCO Printing Ink Mixer works nicely do the trick.
The process is:
1) Place your empty container on the scale and calibrate to “0.”
2) Weigh out / approximate the percentage quantities of each of the colors needed.
3) Mix thoroughly.
